ERCM for Multi-Faceted Coal Company

As part of ongoing prioritization of their role in environmental stewardship, this coal mine customer retained RES to conduct a comprehensive energy and carbon assessment.  The scope of the project included defining the carbon footprint at the company’s facilities and within activities at mine sites, transport facilities, and power stations.

RES’s approach in estimating GHG emissions included a forecast of potential liabilities as related to the company’s enterprise life cycle, from production to power sales. As part of this process, the corporation’s power plant emissions were characterized relative to the new GHG reporting protocols of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

RES helped the company charter GHG inventory management plans and implementation schedules.  The client was delivered a registration-ready inventory and with clear guidance to navigate new EPA protocols. Additionally, RES identified renewable energy opportunities including the potential to grow and harvest biomass on land undergoing reclamation.  As a company that already uses indigenous grasses in reclamation efforts, RES’s preliminary economic feasibility focused on the use of willow grass for on-site energy generation via co-fire techniques at the company’s owned power plant.  Payback calculations included estimating carbon accumulation in soil for sequestration credits.
